Southern Oregon Fishing Reports

Due to a cancellation, I just opened up my calendar for chasing coastal winter steelhead on the swing on the beautiful Southern Oregon Coast.  I have a rare week of openings available from January 22-28, which is prime time. The Southern Oregon Coast in January should be on the bucket list for any winter steelheader.  We chase true chorme here, within miles of tidewater on multiple river systems both big and small.  These wild rivers have excellent swing water, beautiful scenery, and dependable fishing conditions due to the amount of rivers within striking distance.  Please contact me with any questions.  Enjoy your holidays!

The upper Rogue has been fishing awesome this past week.  The weather has been amazing, with temperatures hitting the 60s in the afternoons.   Leslie and I have been hooking fish on the swing every day.  Our clients have been landing mostly wild fish in that 6-8 pound range. We rarely see more than one other boat a day on the water.  For late fall steelhead, it doesn’t get better than the upper Rogue!

I had a fantastic time with Doug yesterday, swinging for steelhead. The fish were very grabby and the ones we encountered were prime specimen Rogue steelhead. If you're looking for an uncrowded river with excellent swing water, look no further.

I had a freind and colleague visiting this weekend to swing flies here on the Upper Rogue.  We enjoyed our days here cruising down the river with fall colors popping and very little angling pressure (fly only season on the Upper Rogue).  Kayla swung up an epic wild hen, and we had multiple other aggressive fish crush our swung flies swinging both skagit heads with MOW tips and scandi set ups with floating lines.  The Rogue has been a good bet this year....

Had a great swing trip with Christian and Michael. The fall colors are just starting to emerge and the Rogue is fishing awesome. The morning started off a bit slow with a few half pounders, but as the day continued, the fishing improved. We ended up hooking up with 4 adults by the end of the day.

Red Hot

A very cool gathering t is happening this weekend!  This has become the premier spey casting event in the Southern Oregon/Nor Cal region.

From our friends at Ashland Fly Shop:

It’s time for the 3rd annual Rogue on the Fly! Held at Indian May Park on the Rogue River, ROTF is bigger and better than ever! A weekend long event, ROTF includes Spey casting presentations from some of our region’s experts, booth presentations from our products reps, fly-fishing games, fly-tying demos, great food, live music, camping, and more!

Leslie Ajari and I will be doing a presentation with a very, very special guest on Sunday called "Make Your Casting Great Again".

When: Saturday, September 23 and Sunday, September 24

Where: Indian Mary Park

Cost: Free!

Steelhead fishing on the Upper Rogue has been pretty good, and should only get better over the coming weeks.  Leslie and I are now available to guide these next few prime weeks before we head to the Grande Ronde next month.

The Rogue river has seen great numbers for steelhead returns this year. I've been out in the evenings for a few hours at a time and have been swinging into some nice chrome. The recent smoke from all the fires in NorCal and Oregon has finally cleared out as well, so the air quality is very much improved. September is a iconic month for swinging flies on the upper Rogue, usually fishing a leader and a traditional fly. If you're looking for good steelhead conditions, the Rogue is where it's at.

Salmonflies are popping on the upper Rogue river. Dry fly fishing at its best, the fish are really looking up for this hatch. It won't be here for too long, so don't wait to book your trip.

Gino just sent these photos from his guide trip today in southern Oregon.  His guest Ted landed an amazing wild buck.  Great fish, and it's nice to see that there is fishable water somewhere within 500 miles of here!

Gino just had a couple of prime dates open up next week on the southern Oregon Coast.  He now has Thursday and Friday February 16/17 available.  The rivers are dropping into shape and fishing should be good.  These are Gino's only dates left open in February.

These photos are from the past two days.  Clients Jon and Armando fished with guide Steve Eadie on the Upper Rogue.  The Rogue has been blown out here and there but these guys had perfect timing and connected with some very nice steelhead.

Heavy rain pounded the Southern Oregon Coastal rivers this past week, totally blowing out all of our winter steelhead rivers.  When they drop back into shape, fishing should be excellent!

The Southern Oregon Coast finally got some much needed rain, but a little too much for fishing.  We need it though and its part of the whole game, so I can deal with my first blowout of the winter steelhead season.  The rivers on the Southern Oregon Coast are all totally blown, mega, as it continues to rain hard all day today.  Nor Cal is a better option for chasing chrome fish.  The Smith and Klamath are blown, but some of the coastal rivers to the South in Nor Cal are still fishable at the moment, as fresh chrome winter steelhead are starting to enter the systems.  Further inland, the Trinity got some much needed rain, and is in excellent condition.

I might open up a few days next week if the rivers start to drop.  E mail me if you are interested in chasing the first winter fish of the season.  I have some availability left in January for the Oregon Coast, February on the Olympic Peninsula is already booked, and I only have a few days left in March and April.  Contact me if you want to chase truly chrome fish.
