Great
Had perfect weather yesterday at Eagle Canyon for some fun stillwater action.
Morning was a bit slow but things picked up once we got a little chop on the water.

Streamers, nymphs and midges worked best for us both stripping and under an
indicator.

Conditions at the lake are great right now with hatches going on throughout the day to keep you busy.

The steelhead season on the Trinity is still going on believe it or not with minimal pressure. The river is in great shape actually; flows and water clarity are ripe but it's been tough. With limited opportunities it's essential to be quick at those hooks-sets and never assume it's a rock!

I feel like Paul Ryan with his sleeves rolled up when I start posting river flow charts, nonetheless the lower Sac is starting to settle down. With these higher flows it opens up a lot new water and opportunities to catch fish.  Tight lines.

Had the pleasure of guiding Dave from Napa on the Trinity. Despite being on the slow side, Dave landed a wild adult.
The weather has been all over the place lately so dress accordingly!

Conditions were chilly and breezy for the Cal-Shingle group last Friday.
The fish just weren't into it until things started to thaw out a bit. After lunch the grab turned on and several nice fish were brought to the net.

We're starting to see hatches of March Browns (size 14ish). Coaxing a monster rainbow to hit your dry fly is an absolute blast!

Beautiful sunny weather at Eagle Canyon this weekend. Fishing was a bit technical at times, but wasn't anything whiskey and some patience couldn't help overcome! Small rubber legs & emergers was the hot ticket this weekend.

Friday the 13th, full moon, semi-blown river conditions... If one was superstitious you'd want to stay home with windows locked, shudders closed.
Besides dealing with some icy guides in the morning, veteran anglers Matt & Lenny hooked up with fish on swinging flies and nymphing.
The river had a nice green tint to it w decent visability.

Had a great time guiding Gil & Luke on the Trinity Thursday. Dodged the storm luckily and was fortunate enough to find some steelies!
Gil brought a nice adult to the net near the end of our float- which was especially sweet since this was his first time ever fishing the Trinity.

Had a good time guiding Ed and Alex from San Jose.
New Year's resolutions set aside, Ed set the tone for 2017 by landing a nice hen.
It snowed and rained on us most the day, but we had the river all to ourselves.

Slow

The Trinity has been a  strange beast to tame this season. Some days fish normal while others have you scratching your head.

Guided Doug and Ed from the Bay Area last weekend and both received gold stars for hooking up and landing a couple half pounders.
"Do or do not there is no try!"

Had the pleasure of guiding Matt & Bill from the Bay Area.
We played around with different variations of flies/egg imitations throughout the day and had the most action on small nymphs.
We didn't tie into numbers, but all the rainbows landed were over 18". Not a bad day!

The LS is continuing to fish terrific, the egg-grab is in full swing. Right now is a great time to fish the river. The salmon turnout has been disappointingly low but that hasn't stopped the rainbows from coming up!

Had a great time with Jadon on the LS last Friday. Rolled the dice with the storm and had an outstanding day out on the water. Most our fish were caught on egg imitations and nymphs including this 10+ pounder that gave Jadon a work out for what seemed like an eternity!

Had a good time guiding Sharon & Eddie on the LS yesterday. We mostly fished from the boat but did a little wading as well. Being a holiday it was fairly crowded but that didn't stop us from catching some fish! After several hookups, Eddie landed a nice rainbow off on a nymph. Not much on the egg patterns for us yesterday, as most the fish were hitting flies.

Had a fun time guiding Steve on Burney Creek & Pit River. BC fished a little slow in the morning but picked up when the sun started to warm things up. Steve landed a beautiful brown and rainbow when the bugs started hatching!

In the afternoon we hit up the Pit River and with the water slightly off colored we threw on a big stonefly and instantly hooked up w/ a hard fighting 'bow that Steve had to tease around some boulders before landing. If you don't mind getting wet the Pit can offer productive fishing all day long!

Had a great time guiding with Andrew Harris on the lower Sac with Paul, Jack, Lee & John. Between the two boats, it seemed there was always a fish on. The egg grab is slowly picking up but the real action has yet to come.

Countless fish were fought and lost but a few really nice fish found their way to the net.

Had the pleasure of guiding Jim and son Kavi from Davis. We floated from Bonnyview and experienced complete solitude. The grab was fairly consistent with a few hogs breaking off early on. Being their first time ever nymphing from a drift boat they both caught on early and did great!

Guided Matt & Craig from Nevada City. We're seeing a few salmon here and there, but it's still a little early. As we all know it just takes a little rain to push in some fresh steelies. Matt landed several half pounders but the real excitement of the day was when Craig found himself in an intense battle against a fresh salmon that ultimately broke him off in the brush! We had a nice quiet day though as we passed only 2 other boats and one bank angler near the end of the float.

We're starting to see a few salmon mill around in the upper reaches of the river. Which can only mean one thing – it's almost egg-grab time! The most productive times to be on the river have been in the mornings and evenings. A combination of PMDs, princes, birds nests, and various bead patterns has been a sure thing. The caddis dry-fly action has been awesome right at sunset!

As we approach our last week of Eagle Canyon, we're getting some good BWO hatches. Bring BWO nymphs and dries!
We've had 10-15 lb fish netted this week- the big boys don't get pinned very often!
Floating lines continues to be the tool of choice, with 9 foot leaders, sized down to 3-5X. Damsel & mayfly nymphs with a midge trailer will a surefire setup-- if using an indicator, balanced leaches and olive micro mays(size 16-18s) have been working best.

Red Hot

Drifted the lower Sac with Don & Ray with the Santa Lucia Fly Fishers from San Luis Obispo. With countless hookups, we landed some hard fighting rainbows. Don tied into this buck (photo attached) that had his reel screaming! Fighting the fish on a 5X dropper, he did a great job bringing this hog to the net.

This is a great time of year to float this river. The flows have been around 5,000 CFS, and the fish are hungry! Go book a Confluence guide and catch some fish;)
