Good I just finished two really fun days with my guests John and Rob. John fishes with me quite a bit, but this was his longtime friend Rob’s first time. After the usual struggles, Rob got the hang of it and started hooking into some fish! The Sac has been pretty finicky lately with all the flow bumps and whacky spring weather, but the flows have remained consistent this week and the fishing is definitely improving. We’ve got some warm weather in the forecast, so now’s a great time to squeeze in your spring float on the Sac! |
Great I had two more really fun days with my guest John and a
group of his good friends. This was a
two-boat trip, and we played musical boat seats so the guys could all fish with
each other. The fishing was just
lights-out for us on Wednesday with the fish eating all our offerings. Thursday, we had a very slow start, but the
grab really turned on after lunch. Despite the slow morning, we ended up hooking into quite a few fish. The weather was ideal both days. The flows are starting to bump up and today
was the first increase to 4,500 cfs. |
Great I always have a great time with my guests Lloyd and
Lee. The grab was on right away for us and
stayed very consistent throughout the day. The fish were happy with all our offerings, but most came on egg
patterns and PMD nymphs. We were
fortunate to have another beautiful day and I expect the fishing to remain as good,
or better through the end of May. |
Great I had a really fun day with my guests Dave and Steve. Our morning started off slow, but the grab really turned on after lunch! They both landed some very nice fish, in addition to a number of “cookie cutters.” We had great luck on egg patterns and PMD nymphs. The weather is beautiful and should remain pleasant through May. After our wonderfully wet winter, spring is a great time to get outside and catch some fish on the Sac! |
Great I just finished two really fun days with my guests John and Devin. Spring fishing on the lower Sac is always very good and boy was it! The grab was on from the get-go and stayed very consistent all day on Tuesday. Today was slow to get started, but the bite really seemed to turn on after lunch. They had a couple of “doubles” and they both landed some really nice fish in addition to several lower Sac “cookie cutters.” The weather is finally spring-like, and the fishing is only going to get better. Now is the time to book your spring trip on the Sac with us! |
Great I had two really fun days working with the Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club’s Learn to Fly Fish program. The weather was HOT and so was the fishing. My guys hooked into quite a few fish both days and the upper section produced some really big fish! Fall is right around the corner, so now is the time to book your fishing trip with us! |
Good I had two really fun days on the lower Sac with my guests Liz and Brian, and then Zach, and his son Mateo. The grab was pretty consistent throughout the day with most of our fish coming on mayfly nymphs, caddis pupas, and rubberlegs. The temps are pretty hot, but it’s still comfortable while we’re on the water. I would sum it up as – hot, but fishy! |
Great I had a great day on the McCloud with my guests Rusty, and his brother Paul. Rusty and Paul hooked multiple fish in each of the spots we fished. They both landed a bunch smallish fish (8” – 10”), but they also landed several in the 12” – 14” range. We were focusing on indicator nymphing today, but euro nymphing is also highly effective. We saw lots of salmonflies in the bushes and a few flying around, but there was no surface activity where we were fishing. The McCloud is an amazing fishery and should be considered a “bucket list” destination for every fly angler! Paul with his first of the day Rusty hooked-up The other end |
Great I had the pleasure of spending two more really fun days on the Sac with my guest John, and his longtime friend John. We began our adventure with a double hook-up within the first three minutes. Catching fish this soon can either be the “kiss of death,” or the start to a great fishing trip. Fortunately for us, it was the later! The Johns took turns hooking into a TON of fish both days and there was a lot of banter given they have known each other for nearly 60 years! This is a good start! All day long! John with a nice one |
Good Today was really fun for my guests Mike and Will, who happen to be retired firefighters – so the fire vs. police banter was pretty epic. The grab was consistent the first half of the day, then seemed a little spotty in the afternoon. By the end of the day, they both hooked into a bunch of great fish – and came away with some great fish stories! |
Great I just completed three trout spey trips and they were very successful. Jeff, my guest for Tuesday and Wednesday hooked multiple fish in every run we fished, both days. The fish were a mixture of 12” rainbows, some hatchery half-pounders, and a handful of very nice fish. Jeff hooked and landed a beautiful 20” rainbow today but dropped the fish as I fumbled with my iPhone to take a picture – yes, it was an epic guide fail! Jeff had two exceptional days of fishing while working on his casting and presentation skills.
I also had a half-day trout spey trip on Sunday with my guests Arthur and Alex. Arthur was new to two-handed casting, but Alex was experienced and landed a few fish including a beautiful half-pounder. The flows are ideal and there’s a lot of insect activity now, so this is a great time to book a trout spey trip! Jeff with a nice rainbow Alex with a hatchery half-pounder |
Over the past three weeks, I’ve had several trips on Hat Creek, the McCloud, and the Upper Sac. The flows are very wadable, the water temps are in the low-mid 50’s, and all three rivers have fished very well for my guests. Euro nymphing has been the most productive technique for my guests, but we’ve also done very well fishing dry-dropper rigs, and you will always catch fish on an indicator rig. The dogwood trees are blooming along the McCloud, which always makes this a special time of year. If you’re interested in learning a new technique, or perfecting what you have already learned – let’s book a walk-wade trip on any of our amazing rivers! Good Today’s forecast was calling for wind – and boy was it windy! Jesse and Julian are always up for a challenge, and they really excelled given the conditions. Our morning was spotty to begin, but things started heating up mid-late morning and remained solid into the afternoon. By the end, they both landed some nice fish and lost some nice fish – oh the ones that get away! Jesse & Julian |
Great My guests Michael and Phil had an amazing day on the Sac. The weather was ideal, and the grab was very
consistent most of the day. It slowed a bit
around 3:00, but they continued hooking fish mostly on rubberlegs and small
mayfly nymphs right up to the end. Phil after an epic battle One of a few doubles Michael with a nice one |
Good Today was Aaron’s birthday. To celebrate, his son Coleton and son-in-law Chris took him fishing on Hat Creek. All three of them hooked into fish everywhere we fished, but Aaron was gifted with two beautiful birthday fish! |
Good I spent another four great days with my guest John and his buddies Pete and Mike. We fished several different floats, and all seemed to produce consistently and equally. We had typical spring weather – 90 degrees one day, 70 degrees the next, and then a few sprinkles. It’s a great time to be fishing! |
Great I had a great day with my guests John and Bob. I guided them on the Sac back in February and we had quite a day – and today was pretty amazing as well. We started our day with some unexpected wind gusts, but things quickly calmed, and we ended up with a great day of fishing. After a slow start, the bite turned on and they both started getting some very consistent action. Springtime on the Sac is such a great time to be on the water, so contact us and let’s go fishing! Good I just spent two fun days on the river with my guests Bob and Rich. Monday, we fished a lower float and they both hooked a ton a fish in the 12” – 16” range. Lots of consistent action always makes for a fun time. Today we fished the top and true to form – they hooked fewer fish, but they both hooked into some really nice fish! Spring fishing on the Sac is in full swing, so visit our website and book your trip soon! |
Okay I just spent the last four days with my very good guest (and friend) John fishing the lower Sac. He invited a couple of long time friends to join him and we experienced some pretty wacky weather - rain, wind, thunderstorms, and sunny skies. With the crazy weather, the grab was inconsistent - but we still hooked some really nice fish. We desparately need all the rain we can get, so this is a much needed blessing...and a curse. We've got great weather in the forecast, so if you're thinking about booking a spring fishing trip, now is the time! |
Good Today begins a new year and I can’t think of a better way to ring in 2022 than going fishing! Fishing the lower Sac on New Year’s Day is how my guests Ron and Steve planned to kick off their 2022. This time of year, the Sac is more about quality than quantity, so you need to know that from the start. They both hooked nice fish before Steve landed a beautiful 18” fish. Then it happened - Steve hooked into a fish that did whatever it wanted, and he could only hang on and hope for the best. Once it was in the net, we realized this was the fish of a lifetime! The photos don’t show just how large this fish is. It taped right at 26” and was one of the fattest fish I’ve seen on the Sac!
What are your goals for 2022? My goal is to fish more. I hope everyone has that same goal and we
would love to take you fishing! Happy New Year to Steve! |
