Great day on the Fall! Wayne and Benson spent a great day throwing dry flies to some great fish! We were able to throw a variety of bugs until way into the afternoon. The guys did a super of job of making great presentations and having the patience to challenge these smart fish. We boated a number of fish and got our hearts broken a few times too. So fun putting 20" inch trout in the net with nothing but a dry fly! Great day!

Am spending some great time in one of my most favorite places on the planet, Fall RIver.  Fishing has been very good as the bugs and the trout are plentiful in the river.  We have been fishing a variety of techniques including dry flies, nymphing rigs, dry/dropper rigs, and stripping sinking lines and finding fish with all.  There have been pretty good bug hatches throughout the day and the the trout are hungry.  In addition, it is Hex TIme!  The Hex hatch has been pretty consistent each evening with lots of bugs around and lots of big, hungry fish ready to eat.  There is really no better time to visit Fall RIver than now.  Here's to a great summer!

Fall River report by guide Scott Saiki: First time fly fishers Nick and son Lucas had a great day on the crystal  clear spring fed waters of Fall River yesterday.  Fish were caught in  medium depth runs as well as in the shallows with stealthier methods.   When the sun got overhead and the nymph grab slowed, the fish were still  willing to take with a variety of sinking line techniques.  Some good  fish were landed by both - a solid first day fly fishing by anyone’s  standards!

I’m back down in the Fall River Valley this week. Confluence Outfitters has a lot of history here, and I love coming back to this magical Valley a few weeks a year. I love technical spring creek angling, and there are few other places that compare to Fall River to hone in and test your skills. This is where your casting, presentation, and feeding line skills will eventually be rewarded with one of most superb strains of wild rainbow trout on the planet. Please respect the history and culture of the river, and refrain from drift boat style angling here, you can do that everywhere else and it’s totally fine. Keep Fall River special. The Hex hatch is in full swing, but is dependent on conditions. On windy and cooler nights, it doesn’t happen. But when it does, it’s been epic. It’s been starting around about 9:15. During the day there are some sporadic hatches of the usual mayflies, and some epic Caddis hatches on the upper river ion warmer evenings. Lots of fish up high, but they are spreading out nicely throughout the system.

The hex hatch was outstanding the last few nights. My clients Jim and Corey landed several fish over 20 inches and had a bunch of other eats. Daytime fishing has been really good. There are some very large fish eating drys in the morning, very technical game but extremely fun head hunting. Sinking lines are also working very well late morning to early afternoons. Then it gets agonizingly hot and the fishing shuts down.

Fall River fished awesome last weekend. Friday morning there was overcast, so the dry fly fishing was absolutely superb with big fish looking up. No dry fly action on Saturday, but my rock star clients Dennis and Tony from the Bay Area absolutely pillaged on sinking lines between 10-1pm, hooking around 30 fish between 13-20 inches. The hex hatch is still going strong. I’ll be back down to the beautiful Fall River Valley next weekend and have a few open days left before I start swinging for steelhead on the upper Rogue soon.

The hex hatch was outstanding the last few evenings. It’s been starting around 9:15-9:20 and lasting for about 25 minutes. Epic mosquito hatch during the same time period. It was overcast today, so we finally had some good morning hatches with big fish looking up. Head hunting for large fish with drys is my favorite game on Fall River if you can cast. Sinking line techniques also worked well the past couple days. I have some open days on the calendar for Fall River these next few weeks before summer steelhead time on the Rogue...

Fall River is fishing very well from around 10am-2-30pm or so. The streamer grab has been consistent with damsels and water boatmen getting very active as the day heats up. Swinging soft hackles has been super productive too. There is some sporadically decent dry fly action if you have the patience and casting skills to get it done, but the bigger fish haven’t been looking for them the past few days. It should get better in these next few weeks as hatches should get going more on the lower river. The hex hatch has been a little hit and miss over the past 5 nights, but the fish on the lower river are still looking for them regardless.

I spent the last few days on Fall River.  The hex hatch is good if not a little on the heavy side.  There were plenty of fish working the surface from about 8:50pm until dusk, but sometimes so many bugs that our chances at a grab were limited.  Most hex fish are in the 16-21" range and put up a great fight.Daytime fishing on Fall River is up and down.  We had a very difficult day on Saturday and then a pretty good day on Sunday.  You have to keep moving to find fish, and some of the fish in big pods aren't very interested in eating.  Go around the next bend, though, and it can be a whole other story.  On Sunday we landed quite a few fat rainbows in the 17-19" range, all on nymphs.  My clients Frank and Doug had a double where they landed matching 18" rainbows.  We were able to do some sight-nymphing on the shallow shelfs and weedbed edges and we caught plenty of fish on blind casts, too.  There is a smorgasbord of PMD and callibaetis duns and spinners, some trico spinners, damsels, and water boatmen on the surface during the morning and mid-day timeframe.

After a week on a remote island near the equator, I came to a truly hot climate here in the Fall River valley.  The hex hatch has been a little erratic, but worth the effort.  It is starting late, around 9:20.  Many of the fish have been tight to the banks, so you actually need to cast to these fish to get the big grabs.  As always, opportunities to catch large fish are there, Bob from Chicago landed a fat one over 20 inches last night.  Daytime fishing on Fall is a bit scratchy and hot...The Mac is fishing decent, with some lingering salmonflies around and some mayfly hatches in the afternoon, especially when clouds are around.  Dry dropper rig and covering water will work very well, Fish the shady spots in the afternoon, or nymph the deeper buckets and pools, or get out of the agonizing sun and nap until it cools off!

It's time to fish the epic Hex Hatch on Fall River.  I have a few nights available on June 26 & 27 and July 11 & 12.  I've been fishing this unique hatch for 15 years, and it still is as exciting for me as it was on day one.  The good thing about this hot weather coming up is that the hatch should go off!

Fall River report courtesy of Scott Saiki: Fall River is in prime condition and yesterday's atypical cloud cover brought the most prolific PMD hatch I've seen in years.  During the hatch, angler skill was unimportant as the sheer probability of fish taking your fly instead of the 30 other naturals within a 2 foot diameter made our odds almost laughable.  Before and after the hatch however, fishing was solid.  Mike from Chico landed fish on dries, nymphs and streamers.  The quality of the fish in the system right now is superb and it's still early enough in the season where the trout are actually hanging on to your fly a while before indelicately spitting it out.  Come on up before 7x becomes the rule of the day.

I had my first Fall River guide trip of the season yesterday with Mike Wright and his fun crew.  Fall River is in the best shape I've seen it in for June 1 in years.  The fish are spread out through the whole system, but there still are more fish up high that will be coming down as the season progresses.  We absolutely pillaged in every spot we fished from 9 to 5, with no breaks in the action.  It was pretty hard to beat.  Not a ton of rising fish, but there were some baetis and pmds around.  Damsels will get going soon when the weather starts to heat up more, and hatches should get more consistent as the weed beds grow in.  I'll open my schedule to guide some select days in late June and July.  Contact me if you're  interested.

This report is by Scott Saiki: Although Fall officially begins in just a couple of days, the Fall River seems to be a little unsure of which path to take.  Cool mornings lead to temperatures in the mid 80's, and the bugs seemed to be a little unsure of the season as well.  Bug activity was extraordinarily diverse which made the puzzle even more of a challenge.  Baetis, PMD's, Tricos, Callibaetis, and even terrestrials at every life stage were all in play with short windows of opportunity throughout the day.  Stan Jr., Bob, and parents Stan Sr., and Lucy came from San Francisco and Wisconsin respectively to try to sort out the puzzle.  Dry fly, nymph, swinging, and going deep all paid off at various times this weekend.  We worked hard for what we got, but there were some very memorable fish landed.  Thoughtful fishing and careful presentations are currently the order of the day, but when you "work hard," you are rewarded.  Generously!

I spent a beautiful day on Fall River with Christine and Doug from Larkspur.  The weather was cool so we had to wait a while for the callibaetis hatch to really get going.  Our best fishing was from 1pm to 4:30pm when the fish were chowing down on callibaetis nymphs and dries.  We landed fish up to 18" and hooked quite a few fish in the 16-19" range.  River conditions are great - this is my favorite time of year to be on Fall River.

Fall River is fishing really well right now.  This is my favorite time of year to fish the river because of the intense callibaetis hatches.  When the wind doesn't blow, you can have dry fly fishing from 8am to 6pm as the fish rise to a mix of callibaetis spinners and duns.  The nymphing can be great, but this is prime time for catching a really big rainbow on a dry fly.  Bring an assortment of duns, cripples, and spinners and your A Game.

After the busy 4th of July weekend, the weather has cooled off a bit and everything is fishing pretty good in the Intermountain area, especially the hex hatch on Fall.  We have some prime available dates left in July before we kick off our steelhead season in August on the Klamath.  We still have a few spots open for Speycamp, please contact me with any questions.

I did my first-ever striper/hex combo trip yesterday.  We fished the Lower Sac for stripers until 2pm and then headed up to Fall River for the hex hatch. We had pretty good striper fishing, albeit for small fish, in the morning and then the hex hatch was about as good as it gets.  My clients Frank and Doug landed close to ten big fish on hex dries last night.  Pretty amazing, especially considering the windy conditions.  All of the hex fish were 16-19" and were great fighters. The fishing was challenging during the day today.  We landed just a couple fish, but one of them was Doug's best Fall River fish ever, a 21" rainbow. The hex hatch was really good again tonight.  The wind totally changed from last night and there were way more bugs, so our flies were a bit outnumbered.  We landed four or five nice fish.  Frank and Doug have done the hex hatch many times over the years and they thought this year was the best they've ever seen.Dax and Leslie have opened up some dates in early July - come up and experience the hex hatch.
