I had a great day today chasing stripers with my guests Ron, Don, and Steve. The morning was really slow for us, but the afternoon showed promise.  After lunch, Steve got grabbed as we drifted over a pod of 5-6 decent fish.  Steve then hooked into a decent schoolie, but it came unpinned as I was lipping it so we missed our photo op.  We saw fish in the afternoon, but they just weren't on the job.

Fellow Confluence guide Luke, his buddy Steve, and myself braved the 105-degree heat to go hunt striped bass downriver on the Lower Sac. We managed to find some decent fish! Man these guys can pull. They make great fish tacos if you’re so inclined! Our guides Andrew and Brian are licensed Coast Guard Captains and can take you on a jet boat trip in search of these great fish. Maybe you’ll find a lunker, they’re in there!

Today was my second day fishing Dave from SoCal and we opted for a striper trip on the Lower Lower Sac.  Fishing was challenging with high winds all day, but Dave managed to land his first striper ever right off the bat.  No big fish today, but we had some action on schoolies and a few pikeminnows.  With all the wind I had to use my A (anchor) button on my Minn Kota remote control a lot today!

Did some scouting with Brian Kohlman yesterday and found some shad in the Red Bluff area.  Not many, but they were good size, in the 2# range.  No sign of stripers near Red Bluff yet.

I have been striper fishing the last two weeks and it has been less than spectacular.  Last week was very slow and this week has been a little better, but there have been very few hookups on larger fish.  The last two days we saw decent numbers of schoolies and a few good-sized largemouth up to 3 pounds.  We briefly hooked one striper about 5 pounds today.  The best fish hooked this week was in the 8 pound range.  Stay tuned for more striper reports.  There are a moderate number of salmon boats out around Corning and Chico and I witnessed 3 salmon hook-ups in the last couple days.

I fished stripers today with Don and Mike from the Santa Rosa area.  The weather was perfect (not overly hot) and we hardly saw any other boats on the river.  We covered about 20 miles of river by the end of the day.  We started off with some good action, but then fishing was tough from about 11am to 2pm.  The bite improved in the afternoon, though.  Don finished the day with at least five fish, the largest about 3 pounds.  Mike landed a couple of larger schoolies too.Visibility is improving and the weedbeds are starting to come in.  The river looks a lot better than it did just 10 days ago.  I anticipate more fish and more big fish once the weedbeds become established and the forage fish arrive in good numbers.

I spent a half-day this morning on the Sac with longtime clients Frank & Doug from the Sacramento area.  It was their first time fishing for stripers and they had a blast.  We didn't get any big boys today, but we hooked about a dozen schoolies in the 10-16" size range.  The water clarity isn't the best right now - it's coming out of Keswick pretty green.  That makes it hard to sight-fish for larger fish and see when other fish are chasing the flies.  We saw some pretty nice largemouth and smallmouth bass in a couple of sloughs, but they were surrounded by thousands of baitfish and didn't seem to be hungry!

I spent the afternoon scouting for stripers with fellow guide Sam Robinett.  I didn't have high expectations due to the high winds and cool temperatures.  Stripers generally like it hot.  We worked some of my favorite spots for about an hour and a half and then I hooked a very nice fish.  I saw it chase the fly right at the end of the retrieve, so I stopped retrieving and the fish gobbled the fly right next to the boat!  We had a lot of action in the next two hours on schoolies from 10 to 16 inches.  We finished off the day in a great carp spot and Sam landed a beauty!Pretty good action for non-ideal conditions.  I'll be striper fishing a lot from here on out through the end of September.  Come on up and see what it's all about!

Catching stripers and trout in the same day, on the same river, is pretty cool.  Fellow guide and friend Brian Kohlman and I enjoyed a busman's holiday on the Sac today.  We started by swinging up some nice trout up to 15 on lightweight spey rods.  There was a huge trico spinner fall this morning and a lot of trout were rising.  We weren't able to capitalize on that opportunity since we left all the single-hand trout rods at home today.  We spent most of the day fishing for stripers.  I landed a lot of schoolies up to 16 and Brian landed his first striper ever and it was quite a fish.

I had a really fun day on the Sac with my buddy Mark from Colusa.  The stripers were pretty grabby today.  We landed about a dozen including two medium-sized fish.  We also saw four fish in the 20+ pound class.  It was a fun day of casting streamers at the banks.

I fished stripers today with my good friend and fellow guide Mike Wright from Sacramento.  We fished the Corning area which was very busy with salmon fishermen.  Striper fishing was good, although we didn't hook into any big fish today.  We landed over a dozen small stripers plus a smallie and a couple pikeminnows.  I saw one really big striper today.  When I was out two days ago I saw half a dozen big fish that were in the 15-30# range.  One was so big it almost scared me.  It looked to be 40# as it swam right underneath the boat. There were good numbers of salmon rolling throughout the river today.  I talked to some of the salmon guides and results ran the gamut from hooking nothing to hooking ten fish.

I spent a half-day scouting for stripers on the Sac this morning and the bite was really good!  I landed 5 schoolies and lost 3 bigger fish, the largest about 15 pounds.  I also landed a 10 pound plus squawfish - one of the biggest I've ever seen.  I had one really big striper (I'm guessing 20+ pounds) follow my fly, too.  The striper grab should be pretty solid for the next two months.  Come up and check it out!

I took my sled out on the Sac today to try out my new electric trolling motor.  I just finished installing it and it works great!  It will be a big help on striper trips.  In two and a half hours of fishing I landed two shad and one small striper.  Pretty fun!  I can't believe the shad are still around in mid-August.

I took Bill and John striper fishing today below Red Bluff.  Our quarry was nowhere to be found, but we did have some interesting shad fishing.  I was surprised to see shad still in the river in late July.  There are thousands of them still in the Red Bluff area.  We landed a couple, including Bill's first ever shad.  I also landed a pristine 20 wild rainbow trout on a shad fly on 12# maxima.  On the retrieve!

Dax and I spent a few hours on the Sac today below Red Bluff.  Dax is on his way to Alaska to fish for Kings, so he wanted to pre-fish some of his 8wt spey rods.  After he got them all matched up with the right lines we went striper fishing.  Action was pretty good on the schoolies and Dax farmed a big one about 10 pounds.  We landed about 6 small stripers and I even landed a shad on a striper fly!  Fun stuff!
