Using the proper tactics and having the right gear and flies will make or break your trip to Eagle Canyon.  If you just bring woolly buggers and a few nymphs you're probably not going to catch very many fish. These fish are not stupid, know that.  These trout can be more picky than a 9 year old at dinnertime. Morning time until around 11am use loud bright flashy streamers on 1, 2 or 3X *fluorocarbon*- preferably zonkers and leech-like flies. **Chartreuse **/white/black/ have been the key colors for most the season. Around noon every day, you'll have to switch gears and go longer & lighter leader with small flies, or go indicator- 4 & 5X. Don't use the same retrieve all day long! Big flies fast(er) retrieve, small flies- slow retrieve or indicator fish.  Lately the hot flies have been egg patterns in all colors especially glo-ro and oregon cheese, tangerine & pink. Black, white and chartreuse zonkers got the most hits in the morning & evening. There has been some good hatches of callibaetis & march browns.

Spring has sprung up here on the Lower Sac.  The weather was delightful the last two days and the fish were fairly willing.  We fished up in Redding yesterday and the fishing was slow but the fish were big.  There were a lot of caddisflies around and a few mayflies, too.  Today we floated closer to Red Bluff and had the whole river to ourselves.  The rainbows (and the trash fish) were pretty grabby today.  There were a couple of golden stones flying around, too.

Eagle Canyon is slowly wrapping up for the season. We've had a few overcast days that made fishing phenomenal. I never get tired of hearing that's the biggest trout I've ever caught. Had the pleasure of rowing Scott and Chris down Trinity this week (business partners both from Redding). With perfect overcast conditions we managed to pin a total of 3 steelies including a wild male that had Scott to his backing (Great job!)  Chris had never picked up any type of fishing pole in his life prior to our drift-- he was casting like a seasoned pro by the end of day. We indicator fished, targeted browns with dry-flies, and threw around the spey rod. Fun stuff!  Steelhead fishing should be good through the end of this month. Don't wait- book now. Call in sick or play hookie, let's go chase some steelhead!

I had a wonderful day with Loretta and Corol Ann.  Conditions are improving and the fish are hungry!  There were no fish feeding on the surface today, but there weren't many caddis either.  Fishing is only going to get better, so if you're thinking about booking your spring trip - I wouldn't wait any longer!

There are still some nice steelhead to be caught on the Trinity.  This photo is from our guide Sam Robinett who was on the river today.

I spent an afternoon on the Lower Sac fishing with a friend.  We used my jet boat to access three prime riffles.  We did all of our fishing on foot and most of it with lightweight spey rods, the rest with dry flies.  My buddy Dan landed 9 fish and I was not far behind.  Most of our fish today were small, but there were a few up to 15 in the mix.  The grab was really good in a few areas and we had several double hook-ups.  I had a few grabs on dry flies.  The swing fishing is picking up and should only improve as the weather warms up.  If you like wading and swinging flies, book a trip with me or Randy Hamann and see the Lower Sac in a different light.

Clients, George and John from San Diego had a good couple of days on the Trinity, we ran a couple different floats in the JC area and connected with multiple wild adult Steelhead to 7 lbs, 1/2 pounders and browns . The fishing pressure has been fairly light and I think the fishing for Steelhead should remain decent through the first week of March. We could use a little rain, the flows are OK but we've lost that beautiful Steelhead Green Color we've had since Christmas and the river is now running Trinity Clear !

The Lower Sac is back in and fishing well after a long muddy break, Late winter and early Spring can be some of the best fishing of the season on the Lower Sac. Fishing indicators from a drift boat is a given but for a more interesting approach it can be wade fished using a sled boat. Walk Wade without the walking ! I like to target prime swing runs with light weight Spey rods and fish dries with single hand rods when the Trout are on the Job! I can provide all tackle including light weight Spey rods and instruction.  Check my calender for availability.

We had a nice day on the Trinity today.  We didn't land any adult steelhead, but we did catch quite a few half-pounders.  We had good action all day, great weather, and plenty of solitude.  There was a good hatch of March browns in the early afternoon that had good numbers of fish looking up.

It's been in the 70s this past week on the coast, not exactly prime weather for chasing winter steelhead. The smaller rivers have dropped out of shape, but we swung up some epic fish this past week. Rain on Thursday will help.

I guided Lyman and Carl from Orange County on the Yuba River today.  It was cold and the clouds stuck around all day, but the guys were persistent with throwing dry flies.  Skwalas and BWOs were the ticket. Lots of good top water action.  The skwala hatch should be winding down soon, but March and April are a great time for PMDs, March Browns, BWOs, and caddis hatches.

We were pleased to host the Shasta/Trinity chapter of Project Healing Waters at Eagle Canyon today.  This is a great group of veterans and they have a dedicated support staff of volunteers.  This was the 3rd year that we have hosted this group and they always bring great weather with them!  Fishing was good and our guests landed many 5 to 10 pound fish today.  The program participants spend a lot of time tying flies and practicing casting and it really pays off when they have a chance to get out on the water.  We hope to see this group again next year at Eagle Canyon

After the last mega storm we have been encountering fish every day here on the southern coast. The smaller rivers are dropping out of shape already, getting very low and clear...but there are fish around. The Rogue and Chetco have been producing the last few days. A few days ago we enjoyed swinging flies in 70 degree weather, and hooked 4 steelhead...pretty unique for winter steelhead fishing.

Prime conditions right now at Eagle Canyon. We've been having mid-day Callibaetis hatches which the fish absolutely love. We've had everyone from complete beginners to charter fishing guides land steelhead sized trout.  Bring streamers in chartreuse, white, black, pink as well as midges, prince-nymphs, micro-may's (olive & black) and sucker-spawn (yellow/Oregon-cheese). When your casting arm gets tired switch to a dry-dropper rig or small indicator with 2 or 3 small flies. Leave the sink-tips at home, floating lines work best here.

I had a great day today with Steve and his grandson Chris.  The river is still off-color, but in less than a week the color has shifted from brown to green.  The visibility is still limited, but it has definitely improved quicker than expected after the recent rains.  The caddis are just starting to pop, but the fish haven't figured it out - but that can change tomorrow!  The extended forecast is calling for more of this beautiful spring weather - which means the fishing is going to get better by the day!  If you're thinking about booking your spring trip - don't wait!
