Good Fished the Trinity for 3 days with two different sets of clients. Fished from Steelbridge to Pigeon Point. Averaged about 3 hookups per day with most guides reporting similar numbers. We lost several large fish over those three days, but the pursuit was a lot of fun. The fish are in and they're selective. River was blowing out even above Weaver Creek on Wednesday, 1/18. If you're fishing the Trinity tomorrow (1/19), may the force be with you.... |
Good River conditions were great today on the Trinity. I guided Luke from Red Bluff and Eric from Redding. We covered a lot of water and managed to find them both a nice big wild fish. Luke also landed a few smaller fish. We had a lot of fun and had the river pretty much to ourselves. Luke's big fish of the day Eric landed this one after a lengthy battle |
Good Once the Trinity setlled down from a giant churning froth of mud and debris I wondered whether there would be any Steelhead around or if they all boogied up into there natal tribs, well the good news is there are quite a few fresh, wild winter run fish the came up under the high water conditions, most are in the 2 -5 lb range but the 1st fish of the day yesterday was a beautiful wild buck in excess of 10lbs. The wheather forecast is wild as well so make a break for it when things settle down for a day or two. picture does not serve justice to this beautiful speciman |
Okay Friday the 13th, full moon, semi-blown river conditions... If one was superstitious you'd want to stay home with windows locked, shudders closed. Besides dealing with some icy guides in the morning, veteran anglers Matt & Lenny hooked up with fish on swinging flies and nymphing. The river had a nice green tint to it w decent visability. Lenny with his first Trinity steelhead! Multiple hookups on the swing! |
Good Here is a guest report from Will Dea:Although fishing was somewhat challenging due to the recent weather, we
still had a great time. Everyone hooked into fish and a number of nice
sized ones were landed. Flies that seem to work best for our group were
dark small leech/bugger patterns in sizes 8-12 (crawfish orange, black,
dark purple), dark olive damsel nymphs, and flashback PT's. Best times
were in the early morning hours and after 3:00 pm. |
The Lower Sac is up to 36,000cfs for a while. Lake Shasta is too full for this time of year. I think we can expect the release to continue at this level for at least a week. I like the flows to get down to 20,000cfs for good fishing. Stay tuned! |
Good We have a group of 7 anglers at Eagle Canyon for the next two days. I stopped in for about an hour this morning. The sun was out, the water was clear, and people were hooking up! I saw several fish landed and several more that got away. Fish were eating leech patterns size 8 in black and orange. The water was surprisingly clear so I think smaller flies will be a good bet later in the day. |
Okay Here is a guest report from Dave, one of our regulars at Eagle Canyon:We had very limited visibility in the ponds due to recent rains. It didn't rain a lot during our day but at times the wind gusts were in the 45+MPH range. We managed to land 7 fish between us, some smaller and a few slugs. Big flies earlier in the day with smaller flies getting grabs toward evening. |
Red Hot We moved Opening Day 2017 up one day to avoid some nasty weather forecast for Saturday. Our opening day crew from the California Walnut Company enjoyed a beautiful day and some great fishing. It definitely felt like the calm before the storm. When we arrived fish were cruising and midging in the surface film. The fishing was red hot in the morning, with fish hooked on every 2nd or 3rd cast for much of the morning. After lunch the fishing slowed down a little, but fishing was still productive. The hot flies today were brown rubberlegs size 8 and olive crystal buggers size 8. Some fish were caught on smaller nymphs, too. The average fish was around 5 pounds. The biggest I saw landed was about 10 pounds. One of our guests reported landing fish up to 28". Greg with a big rainbow Luke caught a lot of fish today Luke's big fish Greg with another big one |
Okay Had a great time guiding Gil & Luke on the Trinity Thursday. Dodged the storm luckily and was fortunate enough to find some steelies! Gil brought a nice adult to the net near the end of our float- which was especially sweet since this was his first time ever fishing the Trinity. |
Okay I finished up 2016 and started 2017 fishing and guiding the Eel River drainage, parts of the Eel droped in nicely for about a six day window. There were Early Winter Run Steelhead about, a few grabs and one epic battle with a Chrome Bruiser in the mid teens, the Steelhead Won. Parts of the North Coast of California arguably have some of the best swing water anywhere and are inhabited with Dime Bright Steelhead throughout the Winter months. These fisheries are ideal for the dedicated swing angler, this is not a numbers game but one in which you are hunting beautiful water often amongst ancient Redwoods, looking for the fish of a life time ! Happy New Years ! the one that will haunt you... just another epic swing run |
Okay Happy New Year! Fished the Calfornia coast under an indicator over the New Year under relatively high water conditions. Fished two days with fish around and gear chuckers makin' me look bad pullin' fish out of deep runs. Drew landed this beautiful, wild hen with a full belly that did some moonlighting as an acrobate. Water looked great for swinging! Nice way to bring in the New Year. Happy 2017 to all! Drew's Hen |
Okay Had a good time guiding Ed and Alex from San Jose. New Year's resolutions set aside, Ed set the tone for 2017 by landing a nice hen. It snowed and rained on us most the day, but we had the river all to ourselves. |
Good My two-day trip on the Lower Sac got off to a rough start when the flows doubled overnight on Tuesday. Lake Shasta is pretty full for this time of year and it must be time to dump some water since the flows came up from 5,000cfs to 10,000cfs. Flow increases are generally bad news for fishing in the short term, especially one of this magnitude. We did a short float in the morning, hooked a couple of fish, and then pulled the plug and headed over to the Trinity for the afternoon. We got over there in time for a great baetis hatch. Rich, Kathleen and Ashley all hooked trout on dry flies over a two-hour period during the warmest part of the day. Then we tried for steelhead. Kathleen hooked a big one about 7 pounds that we lost right at the net after a long fight. Then Rich landed an even bigger one that barely fit into my Lower Sac trout net.Today the fishing was much better on the Lower Sac. The nice thing about a change in flows is that it's bad for a day, but then the fish are hungry once they settle into their new lies. We didn't hook a lot of fish today, but we landed some really nice fish and we had consistent action up until the last hour of the day. The river looks great at 10,000cfs. Flow changes like this make for a day or two of rough fishing Ashley got off to a hot start this morning with this big fish. Kathleen's best fish of the day. Ashley with one of many rainbows Rich's steelhead from our afternoon on the Trinity yesterday |
Great I just finished up two days with Steve and Ron from the Bay Area. Monday was kind of a normal day for this season - Ron landed two nice adult steelies and the rest of our fish were half-pounders. Tuesday was Steve's turn and the action was consistent throughout the day. His first fish was a nice wild fish that we had to chase downstream through a boulder garden to land. All of the fish he landed were over 6 pounds and he finished the day with a huge one. We taped it at 30" and it was a big, deep bodied wild fish. I'm guessing somewhere in the 10-12 pound range. It's the biggest Trinity fish I've had in my net in a few seasons for sure. Nice job guys! Wow! Steve landed the biggest Trinity fish I've seen in a few seasons Day 1 was all Ron. Here is his best fish of the day. Steve's 2nd fish on day 2 Beaver sighting! Steve's first fish on day 2 |
Good Good times on the Trinity after this latest storm blew-out the river for a couple of days. Landed three adults, one nice wild buck with a kype jaw put up a great fight with long, impressive runs. One hatchery fish made the dinner table. Lots of laughs on the river under blue skies. |
Good The Trinity fished good yesterday, Dick from Seattle hooked 3 large Steelhead, all on the SWING ! He brought two to hand over 29" and broke one stout, hot fish off ! We've been getting plenty of rain with more on the way, as of this morning the Trinity is blown below Weaverville Creek but looks real good above with about 3' of visability. Swing em up ! Big Hen |
Good The Trinity blew out on Saturday and by Sunday the upper river was fiahable, the high water has transported the leading edge of our Winter run up and Dick from Seattle swung up a bright one today. Water temps are hovering in the low to mid fourties but dedication and persistance pay dividends to the avid Steelheader ! as bright as they get on the upper Trinity ! swing em up... Hooked Up ! |
Good Guided the Trinity for a couple of days swinging flies and when the temps dropped, we switched to indicator. Hooked five adults with one angler. One fish we lost in Junction City was a very quality Trinity fish! |
Slow We've had plenty of weather up on the Trinity over the last several days, heavy snow on Wenesday night with snow levels down to 1000 feet or lower, that led to into a cold drizzle Thursday, Friday was fairly mild until a heavy rain started around 4 pm and lasted through the night. As of this morning the river high and chocolate brown and is blown out below Rush creek, you might be able to find a little fishable water up around Lewiston.I guided Larry and Henry from the East Bay over the past two days, Thursday we fished indicators from the boat and came up bagles, Friday we swithced to swing fishing with Spey rods and both guys were able to hook into adult steelhead but unfourtunatly weren't able to bring either fish to hand. It was Awesome to see that the boys where able to swing up a couple of Steelhead in 40 degree water !I would think that the upper river above Weaver Creek should be fishable by tomorrow. Tight Lines ! |
