Red Hot Guest report from Tony Carbonell from Red Bluff: "Eagle Canyon Trophy Trout Lakes is not just a fly fishing outing, it is an experience. The fish here are truly one of a kind. Not only are they colossal in size but their girth seems to be centered in their shoulders which truly give them an advantage over the novice angler. Bull runs and chasing fish down is not uncommon. If you want to challenge your fly fishing skills try hooking into one of the double digit size trout that reside in the two lakes. Pulled hooks, snapped tippet, broken hooks and even the occasional boot failure can result in lost fish. The fishing was truly incredible. Bring an assortment of gear. We used a number of different flies with a multitude of presentation techniques. We hooked most of our fish stripping steamers but also used small nymphs under an indicator and spey rod techniques. It is challenging, fun and a must do if you have ever held a fly rod." Newbie Malcolm with his first Eagle Canyon trout. Bill holding a nice fish. Guide Mat helped Tony land a beauty. Liz used a slow retrieve to fool this large trout. Tony with a hefty one. Rookie Malcolm on the upper lake. Tony used a quick retrieve and brown Woolley Bugger to fool this broad shouldered trout |
Great Buddies Ron, Ted, Jim & Harvey returned to Eagle Canyon for a two-day trip this week. These guys have been coming to Eagle Canyon since the nineties! As usual, they all connected with some really big fish on this trip. Jim with a girthy bow Harvey with a big rainbow |
Great Guest Report from Dave who has been to Eagle Canyon more than 30 times since 1993. He and his buddy George fished the lakes on opening weekend in 2010 and have returned many times since. "Lakes were in great shape, both produced well. Most fish came on stripped flys. This year is one of the best for girthy double digit fish. Eagle Canyon is a 'One of a kind Fishery!!'" Red Hot We had a great group up from the Chico area to fish the opening day of Eagle Canyon. Skill levels ranged from beginner to experienced and all the anglers in the group had a great day. We caught fish on dry/dropper rigs, floating lines with wooly bugger type patterns and stripping leech patterns on intermediate sink lines. Many fish in the 8-14 pound range were caught and gently released. Many hooks were bent straight. Many smiles and high fives were exchanged. If you haven't made it up to Eagle Canyon yet, come check it out! This group estimated they caught at least 70 fish! This group is already eager to place the winning bid on next year's Opening Day trip. |
Great I recently had the chance to fish a few days up on a eagle canyon with a great group of guys. With harsh weather rolling through Northern California we decided to head east out of red bluff up to the Eagle canyon lakes. Starting off strong on smaller Woolley bugger patterns we stripped up some huge fish! Both days we picked up fish on streamers, indicator rigs and dry dropper set ups. If your looking to have a shot at some big rainbow trout eagle canyon is definitely a spot to check out! |
Great Regular guest Tony from Red Bluff says: "The Eagle Canyon experience is truly a one of a kind fly fishing event. Great times and great memories complimented with extraordinary fishing. Everyone in our group hooked fish. All in all we had 25+ fish peeling line off our reels and we landed about 17 fish that can only be described as Jurassic in nature. Eagle Canyon is truly a spectacular experience to any fishing enthusiast." Alan with his first fish on the very first cast of the day. Fred with an Eagle Canyon hog caught at the lower lake. Dennis with a profile of another Eagle Canyon beauty. |
Good Regular guest Dave had this to say about Eagle Canyon today: "We had a fine day at Eagle Canyon today. Fish were feisty and grabby most of the day. " |
Red Hot A report from Steven who has fished Eagle Canyon on Opening Day numerous times: "We had a great time as usual. We lucked out on the weather and were able to get a couple fly fishing novices on some good fish." |

Red Hot Here is a fishing report from longtime Eagle Canyon guest Rocky: "Eagle Canyon fished really well. Had a few lulls, but steady fishing throughout the day. The highlight of my day was catching fish on dry flies. I think in all the years I've been fishing there, I only caught one fish on a dry. Monday it was multiple fish. Was fishing a dry dropper at the end of the day (#18 PT under a 14 Parachute Adams). Really was just using the adams as an indicator. Low and behold, they start smacking the dry. Landed dozens of fish throughout the day. Balanced Leeches, Squirmy Wormies, Zebra Midges all caught fish. Thanks again for your great guides and great locations. Can't wait to do it again." |
Good Every year the Kern River Fly Fishers come up to spend a couple days on Eagle Canyon and a couple days on the Lower Sac with our guides. The group leader had the following to say about this year's trip: "Had a great time this week. The lake fished well and Brian, Luke & Kevin were absolutely wonderful. Looking forward to next year." |
Great Guest Report from Carl who fished Eagle Canyon today:"It was a fun day at Eagle Canyon. The fishing was good. The bites were steady and we all brought fish to the net. Best flies for us were white streamers and a rust colored wiggle tail." Carl with the biggest fish of the day Gordon with a nice one Mike with the first fish of the day |
Good Here are some photos from our guests at Eagle Canyon today. We have just a few dates left: March 7, 8, 17, 29 and 30.

Good Guest report from Tony who fished Eagle Canyon today: "Eagle Canyon this year was a little tougher than in previous years. We fished right before a storm was going to move in so I don’t know if that had an effect on the fishing. Regardless, we still hooked about 25 fish in our group and landed 17. Considering the fish we hooked are around 6-10 lbs. that is a banner day in most other fisheries. The fish seemed to be especially hot this year. We had one fish that made multiple runs and took our angler down to the backing 3 times before becoming unbuttoned. This type of fishing makes Eagle Canyon a truly special venue." Dennis with one of the brutes he caught while stripping a streamer. Bill is happy with his first ever Eagle Canyon trout. |
Red Hot Here is a guest report from our guests at Eagle Canyon today:"We had a great day, sunny and a bit breezy at times but all in all a very pleasant day. Enjoyed visiting with your host Mitch and having the lakes to ourselves was great. Both lakes produced quality fish equally fishing from the bank. Floating line with # 12 black leach or # 12 olive damsel worked consistently. Hooked numerous all pretty much carbon copies of the fish in the photo with the exception of the one hooked and landed that was larger." |
Red Hot Guest Report from Dave who fished Eagle Canyon today:"This was my 30th trip to ECL since it re-opened in 2010 and the best day so far. Water was clear and we had a slight ripple on the water most of the day. The fish were grabby, healthy and hot. Most fish were between 6 and 10 lbs. Stripping and indicator methods both worked. Scot and his nephew Will both had their best day here too. Eagle Canyon, a one of a kind fishery!!" |
Red Hot Opening Day 2021 was possibly the best opening day in the history of Eagle Canyon. The fish are huge this year (well over 6 pounds on average), have great coloration and are in great condition. They fight hard, jump, tail-walk, and just don't give up. Our guests today did very well with beadhead woolly buggers fished on floating lines and 9ft 0X leaders. No joke. In a week these fish won't go near a 0X tippet, but it's working fine right now. We had incredible weather and lush green scenery thanks to the rains in October and early November. It looks like March at Eagle Canyon right now with green grass and snow on nearby Mt Lassen. He still have 4 open dates in December - check our availability page and book your date soon! Rich with one of many Tim learned how to land big fish today Courtney pillaging on the island The fish are big this year! |
Good Here are a few photos from our guests at Eagle Canyon today. double hook-up double trouble |
Great Here is a report from Peter who fished Eagle Canyon today: "The water was murky and higher than normal due to the rains. Due to the weather conditions, the fish seemed more finicky and timid on the takes. We discovered that if we used a small nymph dropper behind a wooly bugger, the fish were more willing to grab. The combination that worked was a blood sucking leech with a black bird nest as a dropper. Later in the day, we also caught fish on olive and red wooly buggers as well as on micro mays underneath an indicator. Our fish count was 12 for 20. The biggest fish weighed was slightly over 14 lbs. Thanks again!"
