About the Redding Area

Redding, California might as well be known as Trout Town USA. With the variety of quality trout fishing close by, Redding compares favorably with the likes of Bozeman, Missoula, West Yellowstone, and Jackson Hole. The Lower Sac, arguably the best trout fishery in the state, flows right through Redding. In one hour you can be floating the Trinity River or wading the Upper Sac, Pit River, Hat Creek, or McCloud River. With excellent fishing on offer every month of the year, it's hard to imagine a better place for a fly fishing guide to live.

Guide Destinations near Redding
Fly Fishing the Lower Sac
The Lower Sac is one of the best tailwater trout fisheries in the country. We float the river in drift boats and wade fish, too. Nymphing is highly effective for the river's wild trout, but dry fly fishing can be excellent also. Steelhead can be caught in the fall and winter months.
Fly Fishing the Upper Sac
Drive north on I-5 from Redding and in 30 minutes you can be wading on the Upper Sac. This is a great freestone trout fishery with over 30 miles of public water. The Upper Sac has good hatches of stoneflies, mayflies, caddisflies, and terrestrials.
Fly Fishing the Trinity River
The Trinity River is California's most productive steelhead fishery. Several great floats start less than an hour from Redding. Many anglers fishing with us from October through March like to combine a Lower Sac trip with a Trinity trip. Trinity steelhead average about five pounds.
Fly Fishing the Hat Creek
About an hour's drive from Redding, Hat Creek provides a spring creek experience that requires getting your feet wet. Wading is fairly easy, but the fishing can be technical. There is a great hatch of stoneflies in May and June and a consistent trico spinner fall throughout the summer.
Fly Fishing the Pit River
The Pit River is about an hour east of Redding and is well worth the drive. This is a very physical fishery that requires strong legs and a sturdy wading staff. This river has a tremendous population of hard-fighting wild rainbows.
Fly Fishing the McCloud River
The McCloud River is perhaps the most scenic of all the rivers in Northern California. The Upper McCloud, above McCloud Reservoir, is an hour and 15 minutes from Redding. The Lower McCloud is about a 1.5 hour drive. Both sections have a lot to offer.
