Lower Sac: , by Luke Geraty: “Hook sets are free!”: 4 stars

Spent the day with Mike and Diana yesterday and had a really great time. I think I've fished with Mike for a few years now and every time we go, he sticks some really great fish (often from the back of the boat). Yesterday was no different and we also really enjoyed watching Diana, his wife, get the fish of the day -- a near 22 inch absolute hog of a fish! The weather was perfect for fishing as it was overcast for most of the day and the grab was solid all through the morning and early afternoon. Things slowed down a bit in the later afternoon, but that's fishing. We caught fish on eggs and nymphs and enjoyed our time on such a beautiful river here in Northern California... the Mighty Sac! While we were fishing, we learned quickly just how fast these fish can grab a fly and before you know it, be off. So as the standard guy adage goes, "Hook sets are free!", meaning that you should always set on EVERYTHING. If your bobber, I mean indicator (sorry fly fishing world)... if that indicator goes down, assume it's a fish! We're always fishing barbless hooks and often size 18 flies, which means we are virtually making this the most challenging way to catch fish out there (gluttons for punishment?). So it's so awesome when you see everything come together and that's precisely what happened a number of times yesterday. The bobber, I mean indicator, would go down and then these two would set it and... bam... snagged on a rock. Ha ha! But a lot of the time it was a fish and since you don't know, you have to set it! Well... time to head to meet today's guests, so I've got to go. Today I'm on the Sac and then tomorrow the Trinity and then back on the Sac. It's not too late, folks... the river is fishing great and I imagine it'll last well into November! Hit me up if you want to get out! I got openings in November and December for both steelhead and trout on a number of our rivers!
