Great Tim and his dad Mike did an afternoon drift with me and the fish were cooperative. There are some early salmon arrivals and our trout definitely have eggs on their minds although bugs are still working well also. Don’t place all your eggs in one basket (pun intended), at least not yet. When the salmon arrive in greater numbers eggs will surely be the #1 item on the menu. Fall is a great time to fish the Lower Sac, so let’s go fishing! Tim got into some on his first Lower Sac Trip. Mike with a great fish. |

Good I got out of the office and into my drift boat today to assist with a group trip for the S.F. Project Healing Waters group. Fishing started a little slow but was really good from about 11am to 3pm. We caught good numbers of fish and both of my guests, Ray and Bill, caught a really big fish. We put a couple heavy ones in the net today! Most of our action was on caddis pupa patterns. Guides Brian Kohlman and Kevin Kay doing the morning orientation Brian Kohlman and guests fishing a juicy riffle Ray with a big one |
Good I was part of a multi-boat trip today for the San Francisco Project Healing Waters group. I had a really fun day with my guests Martha and Jeff. For our boat, the fishing was pretty good once we figured out what they wanted, but we did have some dry spells at times. Today was Martha’s first time fly fishing and she did so great and hooked several fish throughout the day. It was a perfect fall day with a really fun group of anglers! It is such an honor to work with these veterans and I look forward to our next trip. Jeff with a chunky one Martha's first fish on a fly rod! Jeff with another nice fish |
Good Today I had a late afternoon ½-day trip with my guest Dick. The day started off pretty warm, but quickly cooled off and was very pleasant. Even though we didn’t fish very long, Dick landed some really nice fish! I’m starting to see salmon in the upper river, so that means the “egg bite” is right around the corner! October is one of my favorite months on the Sac, and a great time to book your next trip. Dick with a nice one Hooked up Another chunky one |
I've been on the Klamath the last two days helping Gino set up Spey Camp. Gino has really taken the camp to a whole new level this year with the addition of wall tents for the cooking and dining areas. I'm also very excited about our chef Amanda who is going to provide some amazing food. I'm looking forward to wetting a line this evening and tomorrow now that most of the setup is done. Word is that fishing has been good for both steelhead and salmon. Stay tuned! View of the cook tent We've added some all tents this year |

Okay It was a festive few days on the river this weekend with lots of rafters, kayakers and paddleboarders out on the water enjoying the holiday weekend. The fishing was slow overall, but September is finally here and fishing should start to pick up. Fall is my favorite time of year to fish the Upper Rogue, the fall colors and fishing can be phenominal! |

If you are interested in one of these spots please get in touch soon! |
Good I had a really fun day with my guests Steve and
Deborah. Our morning started out great,
but the grab slowed down for us in the afternoon. All the fish landed were very nice and full
of fight. Small mayfly nymphs were the
ticket again today. |

Halfpounders will hopefully be in abundance Dax Messett on the scene at Spey Camp 2017 Classic steelhead patterns are on the menu |
Good Peter Santley and I guided a really fun group of guys today. The fish seemed a little tight-lipped, possibly due to the full moon, but we managed to hook fish throughout the day. Small mayfly nymphs worked best for my boat. With the hot temps, two of our guys decided to go swimming to cool off – I opted to stay in the boat. Nice start to the afternoon |
Good I had a great time with my guest Pat today. Pat is a very experienced bass angler, but new to fly fishing and you would never know. Fishing was pretty consistent throughout the day, but he was spoiled after landing a 20-inch fish right out of the gate! Fishing pressure hasn’t been too bad since the re-opener, but the fish are looking really healthy. Great start to our day! |
The two annual whitewater weekends on the Pit 5 Reach have been scheduled for August 10-11 and Spetember 14-15. Target flows for the Pit 5 Reach on August 10 and 11 will be 1,500 cfs; flows for September 14 and 15 will be 1,200 cfs. Releases will be made from 10 AM to 4 PM on those dates and will be ramped down between the Saturday and Sunday of each weekend. If you're heading up to the Pit River on either of those weekends, you might drive on up to Pit 3 or Pit 4 instead of Pit 5!

Great My guests Randy and Debby had a great day on the Sac. Fishing was very consistent and they both hooked into a lot of really nice fish. It was great getting to know this fun couple and I’m sure they’re already planning their next trip. Randy with a nice one |
Good I had a great time with my guests Bill and his grandson Will
today. Today was a tune-up as they are
preparing for an upcoming trip to Montana. The grab was never red hot, but it was consistent all day. We fished a lower float and had the river to
ourselves. The temps were cooler today
and it was a welcome break from what we had this past weekend. The re-opener is just days away now! |
Great My guests Joel and Will had a great day on the Sac! The first time I guided them; Will was just 13 and new to fly fishing. He just graduated high school and will be leaving for college next month. Over the years, his skills have improved and it really showed today. The morning grab was crazy and they both hooked into some really nice fish including a couple doubles! We had a few lulls in the afternoon, but the grab remained pretty consistent throughout the day. They ended up having an epic day and are planning trips during Will’s breaks from Washington and Lee University. |
Great Today I floated with Gary and Steve all the way from the Posse Grounds to Anderson River Park and we literally never saw another drift boat. Very unusual, especially for a Friday, but we weren’t complaining. Steve caught a toad right off the bat and the action stayed pretty steady all day. We caught fish on eight different flies so it was more about getting a good drift through the right water than fly selection. Just another day catching (and releasing) wild rainbows on this great river! |
Good Had a good day on the Yuba with Topher and his son Finn. First day in a drift boat for Finn so we spent the morning learning to cast and present both nymphing rigs and a hopper dry fly. By mid morning, he was dialed in and hooked and landed a great fighting Yuba trout on a nymph rig. Topher also had some fun on the nymphs. In the afternoon we turned our attention to Hopper’s and we had 7 really great takes. Finn hooked and lost a couple of dandies and a few just simply didn’t cooperate on the grab . Fun to watch though. Yuba Cookie Cutter! Finn’s first!!!!! Awesome! |
