I had a really fun half-day Learn to Fly Fish trip on Burney Creek with my 13-year old guest Dylan. Dylan’s grandfather Nick tagged along and watched as I caught Dylan the basics of fly fishing – and boy did he get the hang of it! There were lots of stoneflies out, so we started with a big stimulator and Dylan had several grabs. Once he got the hang of casting, I added a dropper and he started getting eaten on the nymph.  Dylan learned a lot and had a blast! State Parks are repairing the wooden bridge above the falls, so we got to take the scenic Falls Loop trail while returning to our vehicles.

Mike and Steve had their Deschutes River trip cancelled so they decided to fish the Lower Sac with us for a couple of days. They fished with Andrew yesterday and I had them today. Sounds like both days were pretty similar with some good fish being caught in between lulls that had us scratching our heads and changing flies. When the fish were eating they didn’t seem too particular; rubberlegs along with various PMD and caddis patterns all caught fish. When they weren’t eating it didn’t seem to matter what we tied on! We started strong and finished strong today so good times overall on the big river.

May guest Ken Frank and I had an interesting couple of day on the Williamson this weekend. Saturday started off promising with frank landing a personal best trout that measured 22". The river fished well until about noon when we were assaulted by hail, rain and 30 mph gust that almost blew us off the water. Sunday was a little more pleasant. Ken landed a nice 20" Redband and lost one of the Larger fish I have ever seen on that river. All in all it was a good bite. Most fish came on nymphs this weekend. We should see our first good push of Lake fish entering the River in the coming weeks. Hexes should start coming off the last week of June and last through mid July.

I had a fun day on the McCloud with my guests Greg and Kurt. They were camping in the area, so they booked a half-day trip so they could get dialed-in on the water around Ash Camp. We got into some nice fish in our first run, with Greg hooking into two very nice fish, but learned just how hard they fight. It was a great day, but the hike back to the vehicles was long and hot!

Today my guests Matt and Bob wanted to experience Hat Creek and the Pit River – two amazing fisheries within the intermountain region. We started our day at Hat Creek and had a very successful morning. Matt and Bob both hooked and landed several fish each. During our streamside lunch at Hat Creek Park, they asked about Burney Falls. We decided to make a quick stop to view the falls on our way to the Pit River and they were beyond impressed. Once at the Pit, they quickly learned just how challenging the wading is. We fished a couple different runs and they both hooked and landed some nice fish while capping off a great day!

I had a really fun day swinging flies with my guests Steve and Jim.  Steve is very experienced casting a two-handed rod and it paid off today – he hooked fish in every run we fished! Jim is still learning, so we worked on his casting which improved significantly throughout the day. Jim had a couple grabs but wasn’t able to come tight. I can’t think of a better way to spend the day when it’s a 100+ degrees!

Opening weekend on the Williamson River did not disappoint. The water was down, bugs were hatching and fish were biting! Perfect comination for a perfect river. As expected most fish came on nymphs. Golden stone nymphs, princes, copper Johns and yellow sally nymphs were all producers this weekend. The water was incredibly low and clear for this time of year, which is good news for the remainder of the summer. The Lake is heating up quickly and we should see our first good push of lake fish migrating up the river in the coming weeks. This system only gets better as the summer progresses and judging by this opener it should be a summer for the books.

Red Hot

Yesterday was really hot, both in temperature and in fishing. I think we were steady into the high 90's but we didn't mind much because the fishing was on fire! From the beginning until the end, the trout were on suicide missions and smashed just about every bug we used. Rubber legs, caddis, PMD's, yellow stones... it didn't seem to really matter. During the day we hooked two large fish that appeared to be hatchery steelhead but sadly they threw the hooks when they jumped and while we'd love to have landed them, they were a welcome surprise and gave us something to talk! Overall the action was steady and we had a great day on the river. You can't beat catching trout while wearing shorts and sandals all day!

What a great day it was for Lee and Lloyd!  Like all of us, they have been cooped-up at home and cabin fever was starting to get to them.  The weather was beautiful, albeit a little breezy, but they really enjoyed their first taste of normalcy in over two months.  The grab started off a little slow but picked up mid-morning and remained consistent all day and they both landed some great fish!

Took Sean down the Lower Sac before the weather change this weekend. Soooooo good to be back on the river and enjoying what we all love to do. Fishing was good and we had a steady flow of action. Honestly, we really could have had no action and enjoyed the day!!! As we adjust to our new procedures, just know that the fish don't seem to mind at all. Get out and fish if it's right for you!!!!

It is shad time on the American River. We have been catching them since April and they are currently in the river in good numbers. American shad are a highly underrated sportfish that fight hard, jump, and provide ample opportunities for a good time on a fly rod. We primarily catch them by swinging single hand rods with sinking lines out of the boat while on anchor and depending on angler's preferences, other techniques can be used as well. They are a lot of fun and can be a great introduction to the fly rod for new anglers.

After more than two months off I got back on the river this week. I spent the last two days on the Lower Sac. With cloudy and at times rainy weather the fishing was really good. Hatches of BWOs, PMDS and Caddis had the rainbows in a grabby mood. Fishing started a bit slow then from about 10:30 am until about 4pm it was game on. Steady pick of nice fish. It's time to get back on the water. My clients didn't regret it! Let's go fishing!

For the past six plus weeks here in northern California I've been fishing the Lower Sac and *consistently* the river has fished quite well, albeit one day when a north wind was well over 30mph and you couldn't cast to save your life and we had to constantly row *downstream* to keep from blowing upriver. But other than that one day, the fishing has been really good. I've noted in previous river reports that what keeps my satisfied on the Lower Sac is just how much river there is to fish. With dozens of miles of trout water, one can target lots of different water as well as scenery pretty easily. Certain sections of the river are fast becoming my favorite parts of the river and I'm reguarly surprised by just how great this fishery is. Montana is amazing, Alaska is a dream, and Colorado has its spectacular waters too. But northern California is pretty hard to beat (not that it's a competition by any means). So a few of the highlights to note have been the PMD and caddis hatches have been, at times, epic. The trips I was doing end of March and beginning of early April provided some really great dry fly opportunities too, with my double dry set up being a great option. On one particular day I think we caught nearly 20 fish on dry flies in one single riffle, from small "cookie cutters" (14 inchers) on up to 18 inchers. On another float the mighty rubber legs couldn't be stopped and fish after fish was crushing those big 'ole chenille wrapped scoobie snacks. The spring sucker egg spawn *seems* like it took place earlier this spring and the last couple of trips, surprisingly, hasn't produced much. But last week I tied on a steelhead fly, a modefied psycho nymph looking bug, and hooked up with a nice hatchery steelhead, which made the fantastic day even better! All in all I've been fairly happy with the fishing minus that one windy day. Which brings me to an important point: trust your guide. We made the decision to go fishing on that day becausre we knew we'd be able to get a few hours in before the storm came in but I wouldn't have put guests in that situation for a million dollars. Actually... I take that back. For a million dollars I'll take you on a windy day. But seriously... your guide wants to put you on fish and wants to do her or his best with the conditions and if they think they can put you on fish despite the wind or rain, awesome. If not, take their word for it. At the end of that particular day I watched about six guides painstakingly row downstream with clients because the last two hours of their trip was essentially unfishable. Guides know tricks but guides can't control weather! At least that's what makes the most sense to me. Anyway, I think we'll be back on the water with guests *REALLY* soon here and there are many options around here to fish. The Lower Sac in a drift boat is really fun but don't forget about the other walk and wade possibilities! The Upper Sac is a dream and the McCloud is legendary. Plus there are lots of other waters to fish, from the popular to the secret or private. Book your trip today or do a gift card or something! Contact Confluence and let's fish soon!

Klamath Basin Fishing Report 5/4None-Residents can fish and hunt in Oregon again beginning May 5th! Southern Oregon fishing is back on baby!!!  We have been hitting the lake hard this spring with great results. Klamath Lake temperatures are in the mid to upper 50's and fish are feeding aggressively. After the long haul of winter isolation the redband of Klamath Lake are making up for lost time by savagely attacking minnow and leech patterns that cross their path. Fishing will remain hot for the rest of May on the main lake. I would suggest focusing your time along Eagle Ridge for the remainder of May.  Starting in June many trout will make their way into Rocky Point (Pelican Bay) and the mouth of the Wood River where fish should be stacking up in the cool water. Try targeting these fish with a full sink intermediate line with leech or Damsel patterns. With the right wind chop, a Balanced Leech is always a good bet! Historically, this is an amazing time for world class still-water fishing.  The Williamson River opens May 22nd. May and early June, Redband will be found in the riffles gorging themselves on sucker eggs and golden stone nymphs. Because of the mild Winter and Spring I am expecting lake temperatures to rise quickly this year sparking the yearly migration of redbands up the Williamson River 2-3 weeks earlier than usual. Many years the best fishing on the Williamson doesn't begin until the end of June. This year is bound to be an exception. Fishing on the Williamson should be great from opener to close!  May/June - Bring your nymph game! Golden Stones, princes and copper johns in sized 12-16. Try swinging size 8 seal buggers and damsels  Hex Hatch - The Hex hatch on the Williamson River typically starts the first week of June and runs through mid July.  The Wood River is currently open. Floats from Weed Road to Petric Park have been producing Brown Trout taken on Balanced leeches and nymphs. A sink tip with your favorite Kelly Galloup streamer swung under cut banks will net the largest Brown Trout on the Wood River this time of year. This fishery only gets better as we come into summer.  By nature, humans are not meant to be cooped up inside! We have lived through some extraordinary times as of late, and I think now more than ever we need to get outside and lose ourselves. There is no better place to get a little peace of mind and normalcy than the Klamath Basin.  Stay safe,Dylan Woodrum

With all that is going on in the world, the river has been a great place to relax, find some normalcy and recharge. Lura and I enjoyed Sunday on the Lower Sac. The weather was gorgeous and PMDs and Caddis were popping off all day. We had the big river pretty much to ourselves. Fishing pressure is probably being spread out on the ample options to fish right now in the North State. Hope everyone is doing well and we are looking forward to opening up again in the near future.

While we are waiting out Shelter in Place order there is plenty to do. This is a great time to do gear maitainence and get organized for fishing to come. Check and clean or replace flylines, organize fly boxes, clean and organize packs, vests, boat bags. Take inventory of flies, leaders, tippers, fly tying materials. Tie flies and restock your boxes. Do your best to support your local fly shops by ordering needed flies, tippett, fly lines gear and supplies. This is a good time to contact your favorite guides for tips on fishing , rigging, rod or gear recommendations or just to say hi and see how they are doing in this tough time. As we look forward to getting back to work doing what we love. The fish will be ready. Also good time to purchase gift certificates or book future dates. I miss being out on the water with clients and look forward to seeing you in near future. Thanks and good fishing,Peter

Fishing conditions have improved considerably over the past week with the first decent rainfall to find it's way to the North Coast since early February. While most rivers still remain low, the rains that fell have put a healthy stain into most. The Eel basin has benefited the most from the recent precipitation giving the few of us who are still out fishing our last glimpse of steelhead green water before the closure on March 31. My past few outings have met with big rewards with clients shaking hands with some very nice fish. With more rain on the horizon for the North Coast, fishing should remain strong until the end of March. (Just a reminder that on April 1 most North Coast rivers will close to fishing, two notable exceptions are the Smith River and the Main Stem Eel below the SF confluence.)I still have available dates on my calendar, but with everything going on it seems very plausible that this might be one of my last fishing reports for the winter season. Thanks to everyone who made the journey to fish the rivers of California's Redwood Coast with me this season. There were some tough days with some that were the stuff of legend. I hope everyone stays safe and healthy through the weeks and months that lay ahead. I'll see you on the water!

I had a great time with my guest Bob today. The morning was pretty chilly, but the grab started right away. Bob hooked into several really nice fish and ended up with one of his best days on the Sac! The flows are low, and the fishing is great, so this is a great time to self-isolate in the great outdoors! Fresh air, elbow-bumps only, and social distancing boundaries - we have it all!
